Dorcas Casey

Dorcas Casey’s work seeks to translate the recurring and mysterious motifs of animals in her dreams into tangible objects. These sculptures embody a myriad of emotions and sensations in one piece; exploring the unconscious associations we have with familiar creatures. In the same way that dreams reactivate the underlying and repressed, normally confined to the unconscious, Dorcas incorporates what she sees as the physical equivalent of this ‘dream material’ into her work; reanimating and transforming discarded and marginal objects which would usually be seen stored in an attic, at the dump, or re-surfacing on the flea market.
Favouring craft-based processes such as hand-stitching, she transforms more malleable materials like gloves, socks and other clothing fabrics into her figurative sculptures.

“In dreams, bits and pieces of the everyday combine with fragments of memory and take on a new significance, I try to echo this notion in the materials I choose for my work. I like the idea of out-moded, discarded and marginal things returning as powerful presences.”

Dorcas’ large fabric works are hand stitched from clothing material; the fabric flexes and folds like muscle and skin as she transforms this familiar material. Dorcas’s new body of works use textured domestic and clothing fabric which she has coated and soaked with Jesmonite resin, which solidifies and preserves all the tactile detail in the surface of the fabrics. The animals appear awkward and propped up, suspended between power and inertia, halfway between strength and collapse.
