Juliette Losq

Juliette Losq’s work probes the notion of ‘The Clearing’. In this illusive area wilderness and chaos oppose civilisation and order – we feel at our most safe yet most vulnerable; stray too close to the edge and the forest may snatch you into its depths. Fading interiors and liminal landscapes hover at the edges of these symbolic clearings – alluding to the English Gothic of the 18th and 19th Centuries.

These are typified by fragmented narratives relating to mysterious incidents and landscapes, charged with an imagined threat.  Juliette makes oil paintings and drawings, using shifts in scale to evoke an uncertain world in which the uncanny can coexist with the mundane; where the possibility of confronting what has been repressed may generate at once feelings of creeping malevolence and whimsical curiosity.
